August was a very busy month for me, so I felt I needed to reward my efforts. So what else would I do but DRAW and PAINT! Empire Comics in Sacramento offers a costumed model drawing session every last Tuesday of the month. I have done the last 4 months, and I'm hooked!
I have been drawing from models since my late teens. I've seen hundreds of body forms, and acknowledge my level of figure drawing ability as a result of the thousands of hours behind the pencil and pen. I have a sketchbook on my person at all times, and enjoy drawing persons in everyday life. It was only in the last year that I got back into model drawing. I went back to a local junior college to re-establish my ability to use reference to create art. An animation teacher of mine, Richard Williams, once shared a story of how he returned back to life drawing after years of success in feature films. He reminded us that the art journey is never complete, there are always new adventures in the creative mediums.
Drawing the nude form has its tradition for an artist. But, these costumed models, or cos-players, are bringing a new adventurous spirit to my artwork. Thanks to Ben and McKayla for being a new inspiration. If you stop by one of these sessions, I'm the guy in the corner making a mess with a smile. Join me!
