Well now I've done it. I picked up a position at Legoland California as a caricature artist. You know, those artists who draw funny pictures of people at amusement parks, carnivals, or any other tourists hotspot. So I thought it would be something of a breeze for me. I didn't have to audition. I was hired on the spot. I imagined I would walk through the bricks and everyone would just be amazed by my skills. That's not enough. There are so many amazing young artists at this park. I find myself being more of a fan every day. The simplicity of their line quality, the soft strokes to create depth, even the technique to block in their colors. I'm embarrassed that I took this form of cartooning for granted. I apologize to those families that I drew for on those first days. I acknowledge that I have still so much to learn. So I'm challenging myself to take this craft seriously. I'm going to draw Facebook friends and post them here. I'm going to try different techniques and styles, all with the purpose of improvement. I'm still working in other projects, but this fun job reminds me of a wise saying, "If you ain't first, you're last."
